, going after mitt romney on his statements last night, calling into question whether or not the gop contender was telling the truth during last night's debate and putting out that new ad that said if we can't trust him on the debate stage, how can we trust him in the oval office. erin, it's interesting to note just as we were landing here in virginia, two romney senior advisers came to the back of the plane to start talking to reporters about this new narrative that was emerging from the obama campaign, trying to go after mitt romney and some of the statements. when i asked ed gillespie, a senior romney adviser about that tough new ad from the president, he said it's the president's ads that can't be trusted. erin? >> on facts both of them had some issues last night and both had some hits. i'm curious, jim, with the focus group, dial's at the end, mitt romney surged on those personal attributes where he has struggled, trust, sensitivity. he did very, very well, surged on that. the president didn't plunge but mitt romney surged. will this be enough to really invigorate the whole camp

because last night on fox, mitt romney made his latest comments on 47%. it's taken him three weeks to get there. now he's saying he was completely wrong. >> yeah, andrea, i would say his comments, remember on september 18th, i think it was, when he came out and did that press conference right after the 47% tape came out, he said it wasn't eloquently stated. he said it was off the cuff. he came nowhere near saying it was wrong and i apologize for it. three weeks on, he's apologizing. what's fascinating, andrea, i would bet a lot of money which in my world isn't all that much, but say i would bet $5 that mitt romney had the line he used with sean hannity ready to use in the debate when he, of course, expected barack obama would attack him in some way, shape, or form on the 47% comment. barack obama never did so, which i continue to find baffling strategically, but mitt romney i think wanted to get it out there in the air before october 16th and the next debate. my guess what he'll do, when barack obama almost assuredly attacks him in the october 16th debate he will say that's old news, i've

to be a great speaker on the night. >> well, i don't know if it's so much about being a great speaker. obviously the president's done a number of debates back in '08. governor romney's done a lot more, more recently, and there's no question they are both very bright people and they know their facts and the president's going to speak to the american people in a format that's very different. i think the real question at this point is what's the size of the audience and how interested will the american people be in this debate. we've heard a lot -- had a lot of hype about it, but at this debate, two things will come out. actual details of plans, i think the president's looking forward to that. i think the governor has to step up to laying out specifics of his plans that he's talking about -- talked about quite generally over this campaign, and the second thing that i think the pressure on governor romney right now is his own colleague, governor christie, said this will be a restart of his campaign. i guess that's an acknowledgment that the first start didn't go so well. >> they clearly trying to do
